ECE Colloquium: Yu-Chen Liu(National ILan University, Taiwan) “Designing Future Power Converters Using Wide Bandgap Devices"

 
Abstract
 
The demand for smaller and higher-efficiency electronics is always growing, and power converters are no exception to this trend. This work focuses on developing a high-performance isolated DC/DC converter used in applications such as, computers, telecommunication equipment, data centers, battery chargers, and aerospace technologies. Specifically, the challenge is to achieve a power converter with high-efficiency, high-power density and low output voltage ripple. This work implements a half-bridge LLC resonant converter that can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) over the full load range, which results in lower switching loss than conventional converters. This design also utilizes wide bandgap GaN devices, which allow for higher power density of the power electronics. The design, simulation and experimental results of the LLC resonant converter will be introduced in this presentation.
 
Speaker Biography
 
Yu-Chen Liu received the B.S. degree and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 2009 and 2015, respectively. He was a visiting researcher at the Future Energy Electronics Center, Virginia Tech., Blacksburg, USA, in 2014. From August 2015 to July 2016, he was with the faculty of the Department of Electronic Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, a research assistant professor of the Power Electronics Laboratory. He is currently a Project Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Ilan University. His research interests include analysis and design of zero-voltage-switching dc-dc converters, power factor correction techniques, redundant sever power supplies, and high efficiency converters.
