UNIST ECE students’ paper accepted at UbiComp 2017

Activities July 24, 2017

UNIST CSE Seongmin Ham, Jihyung Lee, and Professor Kyunghan Lee’s paper “QuickTalk: An Association-Free Communication Method for IoT Devices in Proximity” was accepted for publication at ACM IMWUT and for presentation at ACM UbiComp 2017 in Maui, Hawaii in coming September.

This paper suggested a new association-free communication method, QuickTalk for helping to control IoT environment. QuickTalk lets a user device pinpoint and activate an IoT device with the help of an IR transmitter and communicate with the pinpointed IoT device through the broadcast channel of WiFi without a conventional association process. QuickTalk allows a user device to immediately give a command to a specific IoT device in proximity even when the IoT device is uninitialized, unassociated with the control interface of the user, or associated but visually indistinguishable from others of the same kind. That way, QuickTalk is expected to contribute to increase the usability of the IoT devices.

ACM UbiComp is a top-tier conference in the field of Ubiquitous Computing. From 2017, UbiComp operates in a new format, inviting some of the paper of PACM IMWUT and oral presenting them at the conference. The Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT) is a premier journal series for research relevant to the post-PC era. This year, UbiComp 2017 will be held on Sep. 11 – 15 in Maui, Hawaii.
